With two regular-season games to go, 28 of the 29 News-Herald coverage area teams are still mathematically alive for playoff berths. The same can’t be said in the race for conference championships. While none of the area teams have clinched conference titles yet, the next two weeks will be chock-full of games that will decide who is and who isn’t going to be hanging championship banners in their gymnasiums this offseason. Here’s a look at where each conference race stands with two regular-season games yet to be played: CVC Chagrin Both Perry and Hawken head into Week 9 with identical 7-1 (3-0) records. Perry hosts West Geauga and Hawken hosts Harvey on Oct. 18. The league title will be decided in Week 10 when the Pirates host the Hawks. CVC Lake For all intents and purposes, the league championship game is being held this weekend when Geneva (7-1, 3-0) hosts Madison (6-2, 3-0). Geneva hosts 2-6 Jefferson in Week 10, while Madison travels to 2-6 Conneaut, so this weekend’s game is pretty much for the whole enchilada. CVC Metro This one could get tricky, and there’s a possibility the conference title could be split multiple ways depending on how the next few weeks play out. Trinity (5-3, 3-0) currently has a one-game lead over Wickliffe (5-3, 2-1) and Independence (3-5, 2-1). The Trojans therefore control their own destiny with a home game this week against Cuyahoga Heights and a potential winner-take-all game at Independence in Week 10. Wickliffe needs to beat Brooklyn and Beachwood — both home games — to keep its hat in the league race. If Independence beats Beachwood and Trinity to end the regular season, then three teams will be tied atop the league with 4-1 league records. CVC Valley OK, mathematically this one is still up for grabs, with Kirtland (8-0, 3-0) holding a one-game lead over Berkshire (6-2, 2-1) and Chagrin Falls (5-3, 2-1) with the Hornets yet to play Crestwood (5-3) and Cardinal (1-7). But Kirtland hasn’t lost a league game since 2016, so — well — you do the math. Greater Cleveland Conference This has come down to a two-team race between Mentor (8-0, 4-0) and Strongsville (5-3, 4-0). The Cardinals and the Mustangs will meet Oct. 18 at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. If Mentor wins, it will lock up at least a share. If Strongsville wins, then the Cardinals need to beat Euclid in Week 10 and hope the Mustangs lose to Brunswick that same night. Northeast Athletic Conference In all likelihood, the league championship game is going to be held this weekend when Windham (8-0, 3-0) travels to Pymatuning Valley (7-1, 3-0). Fairport (4-3, 2-1) is still in the picture as well. One scenario that could keep Fairport in the title race is for Windham to beat PV this week and then the Skippers to beat Vienna Mathews in Week 9 and then beat Windham in Week 10, giving all three teams one conference loss. Western Reserve Conference Kenston (5-3, 3-0) is in the driver’s seat heading into Week 9, with games remaining against South and North. Riverside (4-4, 2-1) and Chardon (5-2, 2-1) are one game back, but need some help to get back in the conference race. Riverside travels to Mayfield this week, while Chardon travels to North. The Beavers and Hilltoppers face each other in Week 10, with the winner of that game needing Kenston to stumble along the way to earn a conference share. North Coast Conference There is no league champion this year because not all of the teams play each other in this fledging conference, which doesn’t officially begin league play in football until next fall. For instance, CVCA is still a member of the Principal’s Athletic Conference and faces only Lake Catholic among its future NCC foes this season, and NDCL will face only three. Lake Catholic (8-0, 4-0) would win the hypothetical league title, though. The rest of the league members’ records thus far are: NDCL (5-3, 1-0), Padua (4-4, 1-2), Elyria Catholic (1-7, 0-2) and Holy Name (3-4, 1-2) and CVCA (6-2, 0-1).
