Bruce McClurg, minister of music at the First Congregational Church of Redlands, will present a concert of handbell music when the Spinet music club meets 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at First Congregational Church, 2 W. Olive Ave. The program is free and open to the public. In the program, McClurg will perform 10 solo handbell arrangements, demonstrating specialized handbell techniques including the bell tree, according to a news release. Assisting him will be Chalmer McClure, bassoon; Victoria Batta, flute; Paul Farmer, percussion; and Ed Yarnelle, piano. McClurg, a member of the American Guild of Handbell Musicians, studied solo handbell ringing with Nancy Jessup, professor emerita at Concordia University in Irvine and author of “Building a Successful Handbell or Handchime Program.” He has served 34 years as minister of music at the First Congregational Church of Redlands where he conducts the Sanctuary Choir and Sanctuary Bell Choir. McClurg is a member of the faculty of Chapman University’s Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music, teaching undergraduate students in vocal performance and music education with a vocal emphasis and music theater majors. He is also a member of the faculty of Crafton Hills College where he was named Outstanding Adjunct Professor in 2006. He is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and is a former president of the association’s Los Angeles Chapter.
