SCITUATE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Scituate woman was arrested Monday night after allegedly driving under the influence and crashing while her infant son was in the car. Jennifer A. Colon, 41, is facing several charges, including two counts of child neglect/endangerment and single counts of DUI, reckless driving, simple assault, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. Police said they responded to Hope Furnace Road around 6 p.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle off the road, with front-end damage and deployed airbags. Officers found Colon outside the vehicle holding her 10-month-old son. According to police, she nearly fell over several times and appeared intoxicated. During a field sobriety test, Colon reportedly told police she had "only had two shots" before falling backward to the ground. When emergency personnel tried to help her up, police said she started kicking, striking them several times. Colon was then taken into custody, but police said her combative behavior continued in the cruiser and at the station. Although the child appeared uninjured, he was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital for evaluation, according to police. The R.I. Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF) was contacted and took custody of the baby and another child. Colon suffered minor injuries, but refused treatment. However, police said she was taken to Rhode Island Hospital "due to concerns of her highly intoxicated state." Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
