LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — October 15th is recognized as National Infant and Pregnancy Loss Day, and one Lexington mother is remembering her own son by hosting a gathering at the Lexington Cemetery. “I’ve had two miscarriages. One in January of 2020 and one of august of 2023,” mother Kendra McClure said. “Between those two miscarriages, I experienced a stillbirth of my son who was born on Christmas Eve of 2022. His name was Lukas.” Tuesday, McClure invited mothers and families to the cemetery to recognize this day and the meaning it holds. “Surrounding yourself with support is very important in moving forward, that doesn’t mean you have to forget about your baby, it just helps to know you’re not alone,” McClure said. Women can experience all types of loss when it comes to pregnancy and the early stages of life. This day helps raise awareness about sudden infant death syndrome, stillbirths, miscarriages and any other types of infant or pregnancy loss. “Lukas passed away when I was 33-weeks pregnant, his autopsy found that there was no reason, and a lot of times that’s just how autopsy reports go is that they can’t find a reason. It just happens,” McClure said. She adds that sharing the grief and speaking about her loss has helped her in so many ways. “There’s such a stigma around child and infant loss that it can often feel strange to speak openly about it,” she said. “Many emotions come with losing a child: anger, sadness depression.” She hopes that women can continue supporting each other through these losses, and this day can stand as a reminder to remember those who weren’t with us for long but left such a big impact. “It’s not just about sorrow, it’s also about love and resilience and just keeping the memory of our children alive,” she said.
