RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson and his lawyer hosted a news conference in Raleigh on Tuesday morning after filing a $50 million defamation lawsuit against CNN. This comes after the CNN report alleging that Robinson made several offensive comments on a pornographic website called “Nude Africa” before his political career, which included calling himself “a Black Nazi” and expressing support for reinstating slavery. His campaign has called the report a “smear” and “outrageous lies." PREVIOUS: Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson hints at CNN lawsuit while campaigning in Durham “We are holding CNN accountable," Robinson said during Tuesday's news conference announcing the lawsuit. "This is a high-tech lynching of a candidate that’s been targeted from day one, by folks who disagree with me politically and want to see me destroyed." “We are glad to take these first steps to fight back against what we consider to be one of the greatest examples of political interference in this state’s history, and quite possibly this nation’s history," he added. Robinson has denied the report and hired the Binnall Law Group, led by former Donald Trump attorney Jesse Binnall, to investigate it. Binnall said his investigation into the CNN report was led by a former FBI special agent, as well as included the involvement of several trial attorneys and former federal prosecutors. "The lawsuit that we filed today is the first step, the first fruit of that investigation," Binnall said. "Lt. Gov. Robinson has always said that these allegations are completely false. Our investigation has shown that he’s quite frankly right about that." PREVIOUS: Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson dismisses shocking comments on porn forum unearthed in bombshell report as ‘salacious tabloid trash’ He voiced a message to those who he accused of "stonewalling" his efforts to investigate the claims. “We will use every tool at our disposal now that a lawsuit has been filed, including the subpoena power, in order to continue pursuing the facts," Binnall said. "And you will not be able to hide behind stonewalling.” Robinson's attorney called the CNN report a "journalistic hit job" with information that shows a “reckless disregard for the truth” and “actual malice.” “There were a number of inconsistencies that were used that went beyond journalistic standards in the way that CNN performed their reporting," he said. "We will get to the truth.” Binnall has previously represented the former president in Trump’s unsuccessful attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Nevada, Trump’s indictment over his handling of classified materials and several civil cases against him connected to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. The Republican candidate for governor also said he’s added new leadership to his campaign after multiple staff members resigned in the wake of the report. “We anticipate on winning this election despite this attack," Robinson said.
