BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Ever wondered where inmates are taken for certain charges? Or the difference between jail and prison? There are two types of detention for lawbreakers and people accused of a crime but can't bond out for financial reasons or because they were denied bond: prison and jail. According to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), prisons are state or federal housing facilities for people who are accused of committing a felony and sentenced to serve more than a year. Jails are for sentences of less than one year and those awaiting court trials. Prisons often provide structure and programs such as substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and educational programs. Jails and prisons can pose risks to the detained such as overcrowding, violence or lack of resources. Where are local jails and prisons? In Baton Rouge, the Baton Rouge City Jail, located at 222 St. Louis St., is connected to city hall and the Clerk of Court's office. The City of Baton Rouge's official website states that the city jail houses all arrestees with court warrants and prisoners scheduled court appearances. Prisoners are held until they post bond, pay fines or are taken to the parish prison. The East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, which can be found at 2867 Brig Gen Isaac Smith Ave., is operated by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office. Over 1,500 inmates, male and female, are housed in this facility, according to the sheriff's office website. People sentenced to the parish prison were accused of committing state-level crimes, including theft, assault and driving while intoxicated offenses.
