Married life is going to look a lot different for Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment) than when they were part of the CBS comedy “Young Sheldon.” It’s not the lack of the young scientific protégée that will be the big change. The big difference is that instead of being shot like a movie, “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” - launching at 8 p.m. Oct. 17 - is being filmed in front of a live studio audience. Executive producer Steven Molaro explains the reason “Young Sheldon” was a single-camera production was a way of making it look different from “The Big Bang Theory,” the series that has spawned both spinoffs. “Theory” was shot in front of a studio audience. “So, we had an opportunity here to shake things up, flip it back to an audience show,” Molaro says. “We also happened to have a cast that we're very confident in, that will just shine in front of an audience and feed off of that energy.” Series creator Chuck Lorre is very familiar with the multi-camera format having used it in productions from “Two and a Half Men” to “Bob Hearts Abishola.” His view is that “George & Mandy” is a family story and the multi-camera approach is better to show that because it is not cinema and not theater. One of the reasons the creative team felt confident with the switch was the chemistry between Osment and Jordan. Osment originally was hired for only one episode of “Young Sheldon,” but the team liked her work so much she became a regular and now one of the stars of the spinoff. The addition of Osment’s character changed the director for the way Jordan would play Georgie as he became involved with an older woman. His character matured quickly, a change he embraced. “It's good to see how he's growing up and becoming the man of the household, and I think we're going to see that a lot in this,” Jordan says. “It's hard for a lot of young parents out there, and I think getting to watch a show like this and getting to relate to it a little bit might help a couple people out, but I think it'll be good to see him grow into more of a man than he is now.” One thing that is helping Jordan understand how to play a new father is that he became a first-time father just a few months before the new series was set to launch. That’s a plus as the Texas native came to “Young Sheldon” with only a few professional acting credits including the Netflix feature “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter.” “Because he's been coasting, living at home, being an 18-year-old, this roadblock basically came into his life, and it sort of caused him to step up,” Osment says of the changes she saw in Jordan’s character. “I think that proves that them together are a very good team because they do get on each other's nerves, and she's trying to pull him along sometimes but she's older. “And what a gift to be able to help someone come into their adulthood and him help her come into her motherhood. I think it's a beautiful story.” Osment is just the opposite of Jordan as she brought decades of experience to the role. Her credits include “The Kominsky Method,” “Mom,” “Pretty Smart” and DeadEndia.” She also starred in the FOX drama series “Almost Family” and the Freeform comedy series “Young & Hungry.” Both actors face extra pressure with “Georgie & Mandy” as they are launching the latest sequel in a franchise that had a pair of series become major hits. Osment isn’t feeling any pressure but sees being part of the franchise as a gift. She says, “I feel like we've been set up to hit a homer. I'm just grateful every day I get to wake up and do the thing that I love. And for me, it's not necessarily the macro of it. It's every day that I get to wake up and spend time with people that are so wonderful, and I get to make people laugh. “And it fills me up every day that I get to do that. So, if I'm bringing my best self every day to that thing, I have to just trust that the end result is going to be good.” The magnitude of the launch hadn’t hit Jordan until his girlfriend pointed out that his name is connected to one of the biggest new shows coming out. His approach to the new series is to just “go with the flow.” Those helping with the flow also include Rachel Bay Jones, Will Sasso, Dougie Baldwin and Jessie Prez. New episodes will be available on the streaming service of Paramount+ the following day.
