Jazz Chisholm Jr. quickly cemented himself as the Yankees’ best quote during the ALDS. From the perspective of reporters, the third baseman batted 1.000 in his postgame scrums, first saying the Royals “got lucky” after a Game 2 win. When fans in Kansas City then jeered him throughout Game 3, Chisholm added, “I ain’t never see nobody boo a bum.” After the Yankees’ Game 4, series-ending win, Chisholm then called the Royals’ Maikel Garcia a “sore loser” after a hard play involving Anthony Volpe at second base. Chisholm also profanely declared himself to be the “little brother” the Yankees always wanted. While those quotes irritated Royals fans, the Yankees’ faithful certainly got a kick out of Chisholm’s candor. How did Aaron Boone feel about them, though? “I love Jazz,” the laughing manager said when asked if he had fun with the comments before the Yankees beat the Guardians in Game 1 of the ALCS on Monday. “So as long as he’s focused, we’re good.” That said, Boone and Chisholm have chatted about the 26-year-old’s colorful quips and the Yankees’ big picture, a championship pursuit. “We’ve talked, and I want him to be himself and feed off everything that the playoffs are, but also, make the thing the thing,” Boone said. “Like understanding what we’re going after and how important he is to all that we’re going after. So he’s in a good spot.” Boone admitted that he would “prefer to keep our comments a little tighter, but they’ll play it between the lines.” He also downplayed potential bulletin board material being a factor in baseball. The skipper agreed that trash talking could have an impact in football, but those players can go hit an opponent if they don’t like something that’s said in front of cameras. “Probably,” Boone said when asked if the concept is overblown. “I’m sure there’s been examples of bulletin board material that you could say it worked because the team did well. Was it because of that? I don’t know.” While Chisholm has been vocal this October, he’s been fairly quiet at the plate. He hit a home run in Game 2 of the ALDS, but he entered Game 2 of the ALCS with a .105 average and just two hits over five games this postseason.
