FRESNO, Calif. (KGPE) - Space lovers in the Central Valley can now see a comet that won't come around again for another 80,000 years. Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, or Comet C/2023 A3, is an old comet, but it wasn't discovered until just last year. The Southern Hemisphere had a chance to see it in September, and now, it's visible to the Northern Hemisphere. The best time to view the comet is 30-45 minutes after sunset. Sunset is at 6:23 p.m. in Fresno on Monday, Oct. 14. This means heading outside by 7 p.m. this week will give Central California residents a chance to see it. Residents would want to find a dark place away from city lights and look to the west. They'll spot the comet above the horizon. Residents will be able to see it with the naked eye, although it can be faint. It's better to have binoculars or even a telescope. Try taking a picture, as even phone cameras can do a great job capturing the night sky. The visibility will be good on Monday, Oct. 14, and Tuesday, Oct. 15. On Wednesday, clouds may block the view. The end of the week will be clear again. The comet can be viewed through Oct. 26. However, the sooner space lovers view the comet, the better. Each night, the comet will get fainter and higher in the sky.
