(KRON) -- Firefighters across the Bay Area warning people to prepare as a fire weather watch is going into effect this Thursday. Firefighters say now is not the time to let our guards down but instead, a time to prepare. The majority of the Bay Area should be prepared for this fire weather watch that's in effect from Thursday until Saturday. Every year, October in California brings increased levels of fire danger. "This time of year is actually when we have some of our most destructive and deadliest fires," said Cal Fire SCU spokesperson Chelsea Burkett. Gusty winds coupled with lower humidity have the National Weather Service issuing a fire weather watch Thursday from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. Saturday. "If a fire were to occur that you are going to see more fire behavior, and it can also aid in a fire growing more rapidly than it normally would," Burkett said. Burkett says this kind of wind event causes concern after the hot summer we've experienced. "Although no red flag warnings have been issued yet... during our conference call with the National Weather Service, we do anticipate we will reach the criteria for those," said Santa Rosa Fire Marshal Paul Lowenthal. From the South Bay up to the North Bay, fire officials are warning residents to prepare. "We want to arm our community with the education and information about what's taking place," Lowenthal said. "We don't want them to be caught off guard." Lowenthal explains how you can prepare your home before the fire weather watch goes into effect. "Check their gutters, making sure debris is clear around properties and defensible space is maintained," he said. "Because we don't want to see a lot of those activities such as cutting seasonal grasses when we are dealing with potentially critical fire weather." "So this is really the time for the public to have their go bags ready," Burkett said. "Have your defensible space and that you've been hardening your home. If you haven't done those things, there is no wrong time to start." Santa Rosa also has new weather stations to monitor how windy it gets in the hills. Check out the link on the city's website. This is not only a tool for fire crews, but also for the public to see how different the weather can be from west to east Santa Rosa due to microclimates.
