Rhode Island senior Gabe Salomons was named the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning. With Rhode Island holding a 24-21 lead with just under nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Salomons blocked a blocked a 37-yard field goal attempt by Brown’s Chrstopher Maron. Salomons rushed through the middle of the line and knocked the kick down. On the ensuing possession, Rhode Island drove 80 yards in nine plays, eating six minutes off the clock to ice the win. The field goal block was part of an overall massive day for Salomons. He finished with six tackles, four of which resulted in losses or no gain. With URI trailing 21-17 in the fourth quarter, Salomons combined with defensive back Ayinde Johnson to tackle Brown’s Qwentin Brown for no gain on fourth-and-1 at the Rhode Island 34-yard line. Two plays later, the offense scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 45-yard run by Shawn Harris. The field goal block came on Brown’s next possession. Salomons also had a third-down tackle for a 1-yard loss that forced a punt in the first half… Before that, he combined with A.J. Pena on a 1-yard tackle for loss and then combined with Westley Neal, Jr. for a 4-yard sack. Salomons helped Rhody win its fourth straight game for the first time since 2021.
