SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A family in Suffolk is still reeling after a devastating fire destroyed their home, but the real story is what — or rather, who — was saved, all thanks to a next-door neighbor. Angelo Madison said he was inside of his home on North 9th Street in Suffolk Saturday when all of a sudden he heard someone knocking at the door. Neighbor saves children, grandmother from burning house in Suffolk "I kind of went to the door and seen it was a kid, so I opened the door for them and saw what was going on," Madison said. Madison said two children from next door came over to say their house was on fire. "It was like a switch in my head, so I really didn't think about it, I just went," he said. He raced inside the burning home to bring the other three children inside to safety, even going back in a second time. "It was hot and it was very smoky," he said, "I got them out pretty quick, then I went back and got the grandmother." He saved their lives and is being called a hero, but for him, it isn't about public praise, but rather, embodying the essence of being a good neighbor. "It really doesn't matter as long as God seen it and I did a good act," he said. "That's all that really matters to me." A woman who lives at the home damaged by the fire said the children's ages are nine months, three, six, seven and 11-years-old. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There is a GoFundMe to help the displaced family. Click here to donate.
