SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston County Coroner has identified the victim of a Saturday night shooting in a Summerville subdivision. 52-year-old Paul “Tony” Malphrus died from a gunshot wound on Coosawatchie Street, Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal said. Summerville police responded to reports of a shooting at the Lakes of Summerville around 7:15 p.m. Saturday. Malphrus was pronounced deceased on the scene at 7:18 p.m. after being found lying near the front door of a residence with multiple gunshot wounds. Adonis Malone, 30, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Malone was released from the Al Cannon Detention Center on a $75,000 bond. Malone’s girlfriend told investigators she was walking her small dog on Salkahatchie Street when a pit bull allegedly attacked her. She then called out for help, and two men riding their bikes nearby came to help, according to affidavits. One of the bicyclists was Malphrus. The men used their bikes to keep the dog away from the girlfriend as she backed towards her house. Once at the door, she yelled for help while attempting to get her keys and unlock the front door. During this, Malone opened the door and fired a handgun, shooting Malphrus several times. The girlfriend told police she told Malone to stop and then rendered aid to Malphrus. The other bicyclist who helped said the girlfriend’s recounting was accurate, the affidavit said. Summerville PD’s investigation into the incident is ongoing.
