FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - After being hit by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, several homes in Florida were left without power. Since then, relief efforts have been sent by PG&E to help affected communities. For the past week, officials with PG&E report 400 workers have been on the ground in Georgia and now in Central Florida to help restore power following the hurricanes that devastated the state. Of those workers, 40 are from the Central Valley. Bill Smith, an electric supervisor from Fresno, is one of the workers who were helping households deal with the aftermath of the hurricanes. As of Monday, he said he was working in the Vero Beach area, and reports several damages to buildings including down power lines, and fallen trees on top of houses, and he says there is quite a bit of "devastation." Despite working 16-hour days, Smith says crews are safe and happy to serve the community. "This is what we do, I feel this is a part of who we are, to come out and help the community and serve the community and try to make it better for the victims of these hurricanes," Smith said. "Everybody is safe, working safe, and given plenty of rest. They can't wait to go home and see their family and loved ones." Smith adds while California and Florida have different standards regarding the electric work that can be performed, they have had no issues yet. "You get a really good feeling when you help people," he said. Smith says he is relieved that despite being in Florida, he has yet to encounter an alligator.
