(KRON) -- Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office detectives are searching for a man who allegedly tried to steal airplanes from the Sonoma County Airport on Sunday morning before being chased off by a mechanic. Deputies responded to the airport on 2200 Airport Boulevard in Santa Rosa at around 9:30 a.m. on a report of a man trying to steal airplanes. Investigators learned that while a mechanic was working on a private plane that was running, an unknown man opened the plane’s door. The mechanic “kicked him away and told him to leave,” the sheriff’s office said. The suspect then ran toward the airport’s hangar and got into a different plane before turning on the ignition and several lights, according to authorities. The mechanic yelled at the suspect to exit the plane. The unknown man got out and ran northbound into a wooded area, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies utilized a drone, K-9 and California Highway Patrol helicopter in a search for the suspect. The man was not located. Detectives released a photo of the suspect, along with the airplane in which the man had started before fleeing. Anyone with information on the suspect or incident is asked to contact Property Crimes Investigations Unit detectives at (707)-565-2185.
