SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Forest Park Civic Association is hosting a free forum on Wednesday to discuss Massachusetts ballot question 2, which proposes eliminating the MCAS as a high school graduation requirement. New poll shows ballot question data The forum will take place on Wednesday, October 16, at 7 p.m. at 52Sumner, the former Faith Church, located at 52 Sumner Ave. in Springfield. The event will be moderated by Michael Dobbs, former Publisher/Editor of The Reminder Publications and experienced local political debate moderator on Focus Springfield. The forum will feature two panelists: Max Page, President of the Massachusetts Teacher Association, which has endorsed Question 2, and Cynthia Agruso, a public school teacher opposed to the measure. Ballot question 2, set for a vote on November 5, would change the current Massachusetts law that requires high school students to pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) in order to graduate. Instead, students would need to complete coursework certified by their district as meeting state academic standards in mathematics, science and technology, and English. This new system would emphasize course completion over standardized testing. The forum is open to the public, and Focus SPringfield will be televising the event for those unable to attend in person.
