In a random bit of preseason news, the Spurs are reportedly acquiring forward Jalen McDaniels and a second round pick from the Sacramento Kings, per Shams Charania of ESPN (that still feels weird to say). The Spurs are then expected to waive him. Spurs plan to waive McDaniels, sources said, while Kings open roster flexibility for a potential addition down the line. McDaniels has averaged 6.9 points and 3.3 rebounds over his first five NBA seasons. https://t.co/aAhGazE6kW— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) October 14, 2024 The move is mostly a means to open up a roster spot and cap space for the Kings to use down the line, and the Spurs have the cap space to absorb and waive him. This wouldn’t be the first time the Spurs assisted the Kings this summer; earlier in the offseason, they acquired Harrison Barnes into their existing cap space in the Kings’ trade for DeMar DeRozan. The Spurs also got the Kings 2031 unprotected first round pick for good measure. Now, they have another unspecified second round pick to add to their ever-growing arsenal. McDaniels was drafted with the 52nd overall pick by Hornets in 2019 but has had a mostly unspectacular NBA career. He stayed with the Hornets for three-and-a-half seasons, with his best play coming while averaging 10.6 points in Charlotte in 2022-23 before being traded to the 76ers midseason. Last summer, he signed a two-year, $9.3 million deal with the Raptors before being traded to the Kings in June of this year. The Spurs will be on the hook for his $4.7 million salary for the 2024-25 season.
