PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — This winter, the Providence Community Electricity Program is offering a supply rate that's slightly cheaper than Rhode Island Energy's. Last week, the city announced the winter supply rate effective in November. The Providence Standard supply option will be 16.287 cents/kWh for six months. Rhode Island Energy's supply rate will be 16.387 cents/kWh. RELATED: RI regulators pair electricity rate hike The Providence Community Electricity Program launched last year. The city said it was designed to help residents and businesses manage electricity costs and reduce carbon emissions. The program sources some of its energy from local wind turbines in Providence and Coventry in addition to solar energy from West Greenwich. The city said it also purchases more than 15,500 megawatt hours of voluntary renewable energy every year. “By integrating renewable energy into the default electricity option, the Providence Community Electricity Program remains the easiest way for our community to reduce their carbon footprint, save money on their electricity bills and join our collective efforts to build a healthier future for generations to come," Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said. ALSO READ: 7 things to know about Rhode Island Energy’s new website Those enrolled in the program can choose to pay more and increase the renewable energy content of their electricity supply from the standard 5% to 50% or 100%. Enrollees can also opt-out of the program at anytime for no cost. Current participants in the program do not need to take any action to remain enrolled in the program.
