FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Electric Works is adding to its campus with hundreds of apartments off Lavina Street. The complex, dubbed "The Elex", will include 296 units, an early childhood learning center, and facilities for fitness and wellness, according to a press release. Of the nearly 300 apartments, the complex will have 89 affordable housing units, 59 of which will be designated for ages 55 and older, the release said. The Elex will also feature retail and restaurant space. The development makes up Phase II of the Electric Works project. A crowd gathered to hear Senator Todd Young and local officials speak Monday, Oct. 14, 2024 at a construction ceremony for the apartment complex coming to the Electric Works campus. Construction is expected to wrap up in 2025. The name of the complex is a nod to the history of Electric Works: The Elex Club was the association of women who worked for General Electric as early as 1916. Senator Todd Young spoke at Monday's construction ceremony. “Housing costs are high, and across the country, communities are trying to figure out ways to revitalize downtowns and make housing more affordable,” Young said. “That’s why The Elex is a big win for Fort Wayne. The public-private partnerships that have made Electric Works a reality can serve as a model for communities looking to increase housing options and improve their quality of place.” Details on floor plants, rent, and pre-leasing will be shared by Electric Works later this year.
