ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - After just a few months, a campaign to bring Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to local kids has brought in enough funds to move forward with the reading program. The Allen County Public Library announced Monday it has met its $100,000 fundraising goal for the campaign, which was launched in June. That means the Imagination Library could be implemented in the coming months. The country music icon's program provides free books to children up to age 5, encouraging literacy starting at a young age. Kids around the globe who are registered in the program get books in the mail each month. There are already over 1,500 children on the waiting list for Allen County's program. Families can join the list on the Imagination Library website. ACPL will collaborate with the Imagination Library of Indiana in the coming weeks to facilitate training and prepare to launch the reading program in one of the only Indiana counties that doesn't already have it, the release said. Many of the donations came from individuals, family foundations, social and civic organizations, businesses, library employees, and members of the Friends of the Library, the release said. By August, the campaign was still over $60,000 away from its goal, at which point the ACPL Foundation announced a fundraising match up to $25,000. And on Monday, employees at Meijer on Dupont Road presented a $5,000 gift, allowing the campaign to not only meet but exceed its total goal, according to the release. “This milestone reflects the generosity of our community, the trust they have in our library, and the value they place on nurturing a love of reading in our youngest neighbors,” said ACPL Executive Director Susan P. Baier. “With these funds, the library will be able to launch the Imagination Library program in the coming months, ensuring that children will begin receiving books in their homes even sooner than we’d hoped.”  The $100,000 is also being matched through the state of Indiana’s Next Level Agenda to cover the first two years of the program for Allen County. Donations are still being accepted to keep the program going after that. Learn more on ACPL's website.
