CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- The deadline to register to vote in South Carolina is Monday, and officials are urging teenagers who registered at the Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) to check their status. The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), also known as the Motor Voter law, requires certain government agencies that provide public assistance -- such as the DMV -- to offer voter registration services. The law is designed to make it easier for Americans to register to vote and maintain their registration, according to officials. However, several state lawmakers are raising concerns that registration was not successfully processed for some voters who registered for the 2024 election through the SCDMV. This specifically applies to teenagers who were not 18 at the time they registered but will be by Election Day. "Obviously, this is a huge election this year and we want to make sure every single person is registered because this will be a consequential election up and down the ballot," State Rep. Spencer Wetmore (D-Charleston) said. "It's really important that we've got everyone who wants to be able to vote...when they walk into the polling place, they're able to cast their vote." Want to vote early in South Carolina? Here’s when and where to cast your ballot According to a spokesperson for the State Election Commission, SCDMV's system is not able to send applications automatically to the election for individuals who are not yet 18 at the time the application is completed. "The DMV's system has security measures in place to basically ensure that it's not sending applications for voters they know to be ineligible or believe to be ineligible," John-Michael Catalano explained. He said that while DMV employees are trained to inform individuals within that age group that the registration application will not go through the state election office and to use an alternate method, some prospective voters may not have been notified. Due to this, lawmakers and election officials are encouraging people to double-check their registration status for the upcoming election. The deadline to register to vote in South Carolina is Oct. 14, and there are several ways to do so: 1 – South Carolinians can register online by visiting scvotes.gov before midnight on Oct. 14. You will need your South Carolina Driver’s License or DMV ID card. 2 – Download a voter registration form from scvotes.gov. Complete and return the form to your county voter registration office either by fax or email before midnight on Oct. 14, or by mail – but it must be postmarked by Oct. 14. 3 – Register in person at your county voter registration office. Remember: most offices close at 5 p.m. on Monday for in-office registration. What if you miss the registration deadline? If a teenager indicated on their DMV form that they want to register, but the application was not received by a county election office, they may still be eligible to vote on Election Day. This is done through a process in which election officials verify with SCDMV representatives that the appropriate form was completed when the person received services. If the person is deemed qualified, then they will be allowed to vote. "There is a system and a procedure in place to ensure that someone is not losing access to the ballot box because of this system issue at the DMV," Catalano added. The process can take several minutes at the polling site, so Catalano advises individuals to check their registration ahead of time to ensure a smooth voting experience.
