MINOT, ND (KXNET) — Monday is known as Indigenous Peoples' Day, and one North Dakota city is celebrating with a special event. The Minot State University Native American Cultural Center is hosting an intertribal powwow on this Indigenous Peoples' Day. It is a way to honor and celebrate our indigenous population, and it's a non-contest powwow. People will be performing powwow dances at the event, and musicians will also be playing drums. Wildfires can damage your water systems. Here’s how Annette Mennem, the director of the Native American Cultural Center, shares what it means to be honored and recognized on this day. "Sometimes there is a misconception that Native people are a part of history. We have history but we are not in history. We are still here today," said Mennem. The Powwow is free and everyone is welcome to attend. It started at 4 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m. in the Hartnett Hall Collaborative Space. Minot signed a proclamation in 2020 saying the second Monday in October is Indigenous Peoples Day. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
