A man and woman are dead after an allegedly intoxicated motorist ran a red light and plowed into their car causing it to flip and land outside police headquarters early Monday in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side. About 1:40 a.m., an 18-year-old man was driving a black Infiniti Q50 south in the 3500 block of South Michigan Avenue when he failed to stop at a red light and T-boned a silver Chevrolet in the intersection, causing it to flip over onto a sidewalk and land outside the front doors of police headquarters, a Chicago police report said.The two people in the 2023 Chevrolet, which was going east on 35th Street and sustained massive side-impact damage, were rendered unconscious, police said.Police were nearby, as headquarters is located at 3510 S. Michigan Ave., and the driver told officers he didn't remember going through the red light, according to the report.The unidentified driver of the silver car, a 45-year-old Des Plaines man, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 1:46 a.m. His passenger, an unidentified 39-year-old Chicago woman, was taken to the same hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:51 a.m., according to the report. Meanwhile, driver of the Infiniti, an Archer Heights resident, was arrested after his blood-alcohol content was measured at .124, above the legal limit of .08. He also was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition with chest pains, officials said. A passenger in his car, an 18-year-old Chicago woman, was not hurt. No charges have been announced. The Major Accidents Unit was investigating the crash.
