Cosmetology is one of the markets showing massive growth in recent years, prompting more individuals to pursue a career in the field. Given this context, the increase in demand for comprehensive cosmetology programs is hardly surprising. The Mosley School of Cosmetology responds to this demand, ensuring those passionate about the beauty sector can enter it with exceptional knowledge and skills under their belt. Theresa Mosley founded the Mosley School of Cosmetology to empower aspiring beauty professionals. The school’s programs incorporate courses that prepare students to stand out in the industry. Accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS), the Mosley School of Cosmetology ensures its programs meet high standards in cosmetology education. Its highly experienced educators, most with salon experience, provide hands-on training that mirrors working in a professional salon. The school aims to help aspiring cosmetology professionals and entrepreneurs, especially those from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds, reach greater heights. Its founder’s background and journey have primarily shaped this dedication to inclusivity and accessibility. Mosley grew up in an underprivileged environment. Her mother struggled financially and emotionally, unable to afford proper hair care for her children. This circumstance left Mosley and her sisters to deal with unkempt hair. “I was teased and bullied for my appearance as a child, and it affected my self-esteem,” she shares. Mosley decided to teach herself how to do hair for herself and her young sisters when she was 12. “I felt that it was my responsibility to make sure my siblings don’t receive the ridicule I had to endure,” she adds. Although Mosley showed interest and possessed talent in beauty, she didn’t envision a career in the field. She believed success meant pursuing traditional professions, such as nursing or law enforcement. At 18, she took a job at a hospital, but soon realized the environment wasn’t for her. Mosley married young and became a mother soon after. She moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, a year later to build a better future for her growing family. The hardworking individual entered Grand Rapids Community College to obtain an associate’s degree in Business Administration and Management. Her passion for entrepreneurship developed here. Years later, she began considering beauty as a career. She provided braiding services in her basement and soon she was making a steady income enough to support her family. Mosley realized then that her future was in cosmetology. As the forward-thinking woman established her presence in the field, she noticed an issue within the industry. When attending Empire Beauty School in Michigan, she realized that many stylists lacked the knowledge to style textured hair like hers. “The mainstream beauty education system usually overlooks this aspect. Many professionals are unprepared to serve a diverse clientele, and this leaves many clients feeling marginalized,” Mosley supplies. This observation motivated her to establish the Mosley School of Cosmetology. Mosley faced doubts while founding the school, both from others and herself. Still, she pressed forward, guided by her desire to help others enter the beauty industry confidently and give back to the community by providing opportunities for those who had faced hardship like her. After becoming a Licensed Cosmetology Instructor in 2012, she planned to turn her dream into reality. It was during this time that she felt a divine pull toward a higher purpose. “I woke up one night hearing God ask, ‘Will you go when I say go and say when I say, say? Will you do what I tell you to?’ I had mixed feelings. I felt blessed but I realized He was asking for obedience even when the path is uncertain,” Mosley shares. She answered His call despite the fear, trusting God had a plan for her. The Mosley School of Cosmetology officially opened its doors in 2017. It became known for its inclusive curriculum and focus on textured hair. Mosley also launched the Hair for Hope program, where she taught Caucasian parents of adopted African American children how to care for and style their children’s hair. Now, the school offers an award-winning cosmetology curriculum that balances theoretical knowledge and technical training. Its flagship Cosmetology Program teaches students how to master essential techniques in hair styling, cutting, coloring, and more. Meanwhile, its Esthetician Program focuses on learning about facial treatments, skincare products, and treatments designed to promote skin vitality. Other programs include the Nail Technician Program and Instructor Program. It’s worth noting that the Mosley School of Cosmetology provides financial aid options, making it easier for students to pursue their beauty education. It also offers affordable tuition rates and payment plan options. In addition, it’s proud to announce that it’s now accepting federal funding, including Pell Grants and loans, for those who qualify. When Mosley founded the school, she only had $1,600 in her bank account. With faith and determination, she has made the Mosley School of Cosmetology to where it is today—expanded from 1,400 square feet to 6,000 square feet and valued at an impressive $1.2 million. This success story attests to the innovative woman’s commitment to changing people’s lives. The founder seeks investors and partnerships to expand the Mosley School of Cosmetology to other cities, including Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon, Michigan. Her goal is to open at least three new schools by 2026. The post Theresa Mosley on Founding Mosley School of Cosmetology to Empower Future Beauty Professionals appeared first on LA Weekly.
