Hilton Bayfront workers vote to approve new contract, end strike

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Following a more than month-long strike, workers at the Hilton Bayfront San Diego voted to approve a new contract last week.
The four-year contract includes a wage increase for both non-tipped and tipped hotel workers that the union described as "significant," increased contributions to workers' pensions and healthcare, improved gratuity policies for restaurant workers, and changes to paid time off.
The union representing the workers, UNITE HERE Local 30, says the new agreement also has language moderating workload levels and protecting against harassment.

According to UNITE HERE, the agreement with Hilton Bayfront was approved by a near unanimous vote — about 94% — by its members on Wednesday.
“This is a great contract for the Hilton Bayfront workers and Local 30,” Brigette Browning, UNITE HERE Local 30 president, said in a news release on the new contract. “Hotel workers are the backbone of the hotel industry, and it’s only right for them to receive the recognition they have earned. One job should be enough for every Local 30 member in San Diego.”
The Hilton Bayfront workers walked off the job shortly after their previous contract expired in early September. They hit the picket lines alongside unionized workers at nearly a dozen other hotels across the U.S.
The more than 700 Hilton Bayfront workers represented by the union — including housekeepers, dishwashers, front desk agents, cooks and servers, among others — were demanding better pay and the reversal of cost-cutting measures that had saddled staff with unmanageable workloads.
According to the local UNITE HERE chapter, the strike ended up becoming one of the longest in its history.
“We all knew we were going to win if we just stayed strong to win a life-changing contract,” Yenifer Alonso, a housekeeper at Hilton Bayfront, said in the release. “This journey has been a wild experience for myself and many of my co-workers. We never thought we were going to be on strike for so long, but we knew we had to keep fighting in solidarity."
The contract authorization comes as unionized Hotel del Coronado workers, who are also represented by UNITE HERE Local 30, are on the precipice of striking themselves.

Last week, the more than 800 unionized staff at the Hotel del, which is also managed by Hilton, voted to approve a strike anytime after their contract expires on Oct. 31.
According to the union, their demands are similar to those the Hilton Bayfront workers had in their collective bargaining efforts, including better pay and protections from understaffing and cumbersome workloads.
In a statement sent to FOX 5/KUSI, Hilton said hotel management is "confident" they will be able to reach an agreement with a new contract "without any strike or other labor dispute activity."
