WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – College Hill is known during Halloween as a prime location for trick-or-treaters, but have you ever wondered what goes into those elaborate Halloween displays? "It's like, you got to go see College Hill," Tyler Staats said. "You got to go see the decorations, see the atmosphere. You know, usually a night before people will, if they don't want to show up on Halloween night, it'll be just as packed as Halloween night." Staats has lived in College Hill since he was a kid in 1987. "It's just something that kids are going to remember, and I know it's still scary to this day for most, including myself," Staats said. "Growing up, I always loved the holiday, and when we moved to College Hill a long, long time ago, many moons ago, it was an experience. It really was. I mean, there's trick-or-treating, and there's fun in every neighborhood, but it was just something about College Hill where everybody in the neighborhood was out and about." Major home improvement retailer files for bankruptcy, announces sale plans Staats has lived in his current house since 2013 and has the clown house on Belmont. He was inspired in 2017 when "It" came out. Whether people embrace the dozens of clowns or are terrified, Staats loves it. "You're going to have those people that love it, and you're going to have those people with that Capital n, nope, don't want to have anything to do with it," Staats said. "And I understand." These elaborate displays aren't cheap. The supplies can cost hundreds of dollars for each item. "It's all to kind of pay it back," Staats said. "It's really for the family, for the kids, you know loving seeing their faces when they come out and seeing the decorations and their reaction to it and whether they want to get close to it or not." It takes a solid day to put everything up. "I love the neighborhood, born, and raised over here," Staats said. "This holiday means a lot to me. And I know that the thousands of people that show up here, it means a lot to them. And so it's just giving them a good show, good enough to where they're going to want to keep coming back." No tricks, just trunks and treats on this local candy map A successful Halloween display has become an important part of Staat's year. "I joke with people; I say inflatables are a gateway drug to more and more decorations," Staats said. "But I love it. I love seeing people's reactions. I love seeing the kids, the families that come here and have a great time because that used to be me as a kid. Word of mouth still travels. It's an awesome time. I mean, I go crazy at Christmas, but Halloween is my favorite by far." Staats says he's going to continue it as long as he can. "I know what Halloween means to this neighborhood," Staats said. "It's just something that I've gladly carried on. As long as I'm walking, I'll keep carrying on because it's such a great time. The weather's beautiful, sports are on. Everybody's having a good time."
