MOUNT LAUREL — For the first time, Rowan College at Burlington County will host Veterans Smile Day at its Dental Hygiene Clinic on October 25. With the help of the Mars Wrigley Community Service grant, which focuses on improving the well-being of society through oral care, local veterans can look forward to dental care from volunteer dental professionals and RCBC dental hygiene students at no cost. “It’s humbling to be able to open the doors of Rowan College at Burlington County’s dental clinic to the brave men and women who have valiantly served our country,” said RCBC President Dr. Michael A. Cioce. “We’re proud of our students, faculty, and volunteer dental professionals who are committed to giving us all something to smile about ahead of Veterans Day this year.” Following the success of RCBC’s Give Kids a Smile Day, the college’s Director of Dental Hygiene Amy Shah wanted to organize another event to serve another deserving population. Dental insurance is not often a benefit that the veteran population receives, with almost 85% of the 8.7 million veterans enrolled in the system ineligible for Veterans Affairs dental benefits. At RCBC’s dental hygiene clinic, veterans will receive the dental exams, x-rays, cleaning, and even fillings and extractions they need in a clean and welcoming environment. “All veterans will be greeted with warmth and respect to ensure they leave not only with a healthier mouth but feeling they are truly valued for their service,” Shah said. “It feels rewarding to bring this initiative to our community and provide a space where we can give back to veterans who have given so much.” The event also offers a unique opportunity to RCBC dental hygiene students who have volunteered. They will be able to work alongside experienced professionals in a manner that extends beyond the regular classroom and clinical setting, connecting with veterans and fostering a deeper understanding of the impact healthcare can have on underserved communities. “It’s an invaluable experience that combines professional growth with a meaningful contribution to society,” Shah said.
