RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) --Public libraries are an essential asset for many communities. They offer free books, activities for families, and educational places for the community to learn new things. The Rapid City Public Library operates as a hub for all, working to provide towards the needs of the community. "So public libraries are a way to provide access to the community for literacy, education, technology, and tools that they might not be able to have at home. And so we're also a community gathering place where people can come, meet, and study. So it's just a great place for people to be able to get what they need," Public Relations Coordinator Laurinda Tapper said. Daily free events can get families into the library and start the relationship with books. "We have a lot of fun times with families coming in for a one time event and then just taking a look around and seeing how much the library has changed in the last few years. They see all the fun things that were added for the enjoyment and for the betterment of the community," Book mobile Library Associate Lead Brady Jones said. "I think a library is generally a great place to come for multiple resources. But personally we come to the library because we're a homeschooling family. And with the amount of learning that we're doing at home the books here really supplement that," local Cynthia Robertson said. One thing that the Rapid City Public Library strives to be is a resource for any and all in the community. And some of the librarians talk about it being a little bit of a fun challenge on making sure that everybody that comes in, finds what they're looking for. "So libraries have this reputation that we are just books, and we do have a lot of books to offer whether it's physical or digital. But we offer technology tools and tangible things for people to check out. You know, we have the makerspace where people can bring their creations to life. We have disc golf kits, state park passes, wifi hotspots. And another thing that we do is provide services like notary and test proctoring and faxing," Tapper said. "When she was really young they had events upstairs that we were able to take advantage of. Yeah she really gets into the graphic novels and even the computerized or tablet games you know they have. Everything from the makerspace to the birds," Robertson said. One major event the library offers is weekly Story Time. This provides reading to the kids, and shows parents how they can institute those same practices in their home. "They are in a big group setting and share the joy of reading a story together. And then parents can kind of look around at the books that we have here in the library, choose a few that would really appeal to their children as their own interests are kind of growing, and just get them excited to not only sit down with a book, but sit down with the family as well," Jones said. Librarians here say that a free library card can open unlimited amounts of doors for all readers. Along with daily activities, the Rapid City Public Library has a mobile library they take throughout town to various events.
