MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- In-person detention and delinquency hearings at Shelby County Juvenile Court will have to wait a little longer after news that deputies will not provide transportation to the building. The Shelby County Juvenile Court has been closed since May due to health concerns inside the building from asbestos and mold. They were supposed to return to in-person hearings on Monday, but now they must continue virtual due to transportation problems. The court returned to its original location along Adams Avenue at the end of September. On Friday, officials said deputies would not provide transportation because the sheriff's office lacks manpower and has budget constraints. Now, an estimated 150 cases could be impacted. Juvenile Court returns to Adams Avenue after asbestos, mold cleanup Shelby County Commissioner Charlie Caswell says the children aren't the problem, the county is. "This county needs to know that when we keep going on the news going, 'our children are the problem', no we're the problem because in our county for decades we have failed to invest in these, in these children who are returning to our neighborhoods," Caswell said. At this time it is unclear how long things will remain virtual. WREG has reached out to the Sheriff's Office to get their side of the story but has yet to hear back.
