First responders have breakfast with Lord’s Legacy members
Oct 14, 2024
NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — This morning, Lord’s Legacy hosted their 2nd annual First Responders Breakfast from 8:30 to 10.
Police officers, firefighters, paramedics and more showed up to eat, talk and hang out with the members of Lord’s Legacy. Lord’s Legacy is an organization that helps adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. CEO Heather Goodwill says the idea for the first responder’s breakfast came after she realized many members were afraid of those in uniform.
“We wanted to be a bridge to help them to see that it’s a safe space to be,” Goodwill said.
She added that not only do these types of events help the members, but they also help the first responders. While first responders answer to all sorts of calls, the one’s coming from Lord’s Legacy can look a little different. Goodwill says it’s important that first responders know how to communicate with their members, so they can get the help they need.
“We have participants with conditions that generally will make it pretty common throughout the year to interact with 911 dispatchers and the paramedics,” Goodwill said. “They have been just incredible to us at Lord’s Legacy, they know generally ‘oh is this a Lord’s Legacy home’ and they’ll treat our participants with the most compassion and dignity as possible.”
