(PUEBLO, Colo.) — October 15 marks a year since a train derailed and caused a bridge collapse in Pueblo killing one person. On Oct. 15, 2023, a BNSF train derailed about five miles north of Pueblo, causing multiple train cars to crash down to I-25 and killing semi-truck driver, 60-year-old Lafollette Henderson. The derailment spilled a large quantity of coal on the highway and destroyed the bridge north of Purcell Boulevard. On Oct. 8, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported a broken rail caused the deadly train derailment. Video footage from a previous train's rear shows a broken rail. Report: Broken rail caused deadly I-25 train derailment The report said the rail, made out of two thermite field welds, showed signs of friction batter and sudden catastrophic failure. Courtesy: NTSB Both rails joined at the weld showed they hadn't been previously drilled for joint bars and had a height difference. So far, track damages have been estimated to be $10,400,000 while mechanical damages are estimated at $2,353,722.
