BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- By now you've probably heard of "opa," the Greek word that means celebration, but there is another word to help expand that Greek vocabulary of yours. "Yassou!", was what people screamed upon entry to the festival. Yassou meaning, "Hi there!", according to attendees. It's appropriate they chose to say this, considering the welcoming atmosphere of the festival, which supports the St. George Greek Orthodox Church on Truxtun Avenue. Honoring Hispanic Heritage with 17’s Cecilia Trevino "Greek culture is very happy, the food is the best in the world," said Eleas Exarchoulakos, who worked the lamb shanks booth. "It's proven the Mediterranean diet is bound to make you happier." It may be one of the best smelling food festivals you could be at. Everything from the lamb shanks, to the gyros smells amazing, and like Exarchoulakos said, fresh. "You could just smell the aroma," said Elaine Solan, who was also present at the festival, working the bar. It's more than just food, it's culture and music that they're sharing here too. Never miss a story: Make KGET.com your homepage "It is just a happy time and it's just energetic," said Solan. "We just engage everybody and we encourage everybody to come in, come out and dance with us." For Exarchoulakos, he believes that sharing his food, music and culture with others will allow him to share his happiness, and the happiness of Greeks, with others. "What really speaks to the heart is good food, dance, good company, and something to laugh about and make memories about," said Exarchoulakos. "That's what we offer here at the Greek festival."
