RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The National Hurricane Center in Miami is watching a disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean that forecasters say could develop into a tropical system. The chances of development for AL94 have already doubled from 20 percent Sunday morning, the hurricane center reported. The "well-defined area of low pressure" several hundred miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands has a medium -- or 40 percent chance -- of formation over the next seven days, according to forecasters Sunday afternoon at the National Hurricane Center. The disturbance only has a 10 percent chance of development over the next two days. Donate Here | Join CBS 17 in supporting those impacted most by Hurricane Helene "This system is currently embedded in an unfavorable environment and development is not anticipated over the next couple of days," the hurricane center said in a Tropical Weather Outlook. The system is forecast to move into an area that could help development. "However, this system is forecast to move generally westward to west-southwestward, and environmental conditions could become more favorable for additional development by the mid to latter part of this week," the Tropical Weather Outlook said. The long-term forecast models have been indicating this development potential over the past few days.
