EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — An East Providence man was arrested on Friday, and is now facing numerous gun and domestic violence charges. According to a release, officers responded to the scene after a family member called police. Upon arrival, police made contact with 40-year-old Herlin Perry in an upstairs bedroom. Perry was allegedly holding a firearm and pleaded with officers to shoot him, refusing to comply with the officer’s commands to drop the gun. The officers eventually retrieved the alleged semi-automatic pistol he was holding, which was determined to be loaded. A violent struggle then ensued with Perry for several minutes, according to police. During the struggle, arresting officers allegedly observed several large capacity magazines strewn about the room. A loaded AR-15 sporting rifle was allegedly also located within arm’s reach of Perry. Several loaded, large capacity magazines were also allegedly lined up on an adjacent armchair. No officers were injured during the struggle. Perry was transported to the police station, then to the hospital after he made comments he wanted to harm himself. Perry was eventually charged with domestic violence, four counts of large capacity feeding devices prohibited, carrying a weapon while intoxicated, and resisting arrest. “This was a very dangerous and volatile situation,” Police Chief Christopher Francesconi said in a statement. “If not for my officer’s efforts to deescalate, this could have ended much differently. I commend the officers for their actions during this violent situation, which thankfully led to no injuries to them, Mr. Perry or others present in the residence,” he said. Categories: News
