LEAWOOD, Kan. -- Leawood police are investigating an "unusual" overnight jewelry store burglary. It happened in the 8900 offices building at 89th and State Line in Leawood. According to Sgt. Mike Marchese, burglaries are not unusual; they cover them all the time, but the method of operation in this case is. One man in critical condition after stabbing near State Line Jeweler Stephen Burstein said the burglars used a ladder at the back of the building, tore out a window of another business, went through that office, and then used tools to cut through steel reinforcements and a stucco wall into another office. They then cut through another wall into Burstein's store and trashed it. The burglars trashed the place, ripping out wires and trying to cover surveillance cameras. Burstein says it's not clear if the surveillance videos recorded anything. KCPD investigating homicide near 35th and Cleveland Ave Burstein is a five-generation jeweler and for several hours after taking a call from dispatch, he was waiting in his parking lot to be allowed into his store. When he first arrived, officers let him go in for a few minutes and that's when he took a couple of pictures with his cell phone. Burstein says he feels blessed that no one was hurt but is still shaken up. Leawood police ask to call (913) 642-5555 if anyone saw anything.
