Man killed, wife critically hurt in golf cart crash with impaired driver in North Carolina

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man has been charged with impaired driving after he crashed into a golf cart that killed a man and critically injured his wife, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Around 3:10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, highway patrol responded to the crash on Hickory Nut Ridge Road near Baton Church Road. Officials say a golf cart was trying to turn left from a private driveway and pulled into the path of a 2018 Chevy Malibu going east.

The driver of the golf cart, 58-year-old Roy Shane Epps, was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries. His wife, 57-year-old Julie Safford Epps, was taken to a medical center with life-threatening injuries.
Highway Patrol says the driver of the Malibu, 33-year-old Cody Lyndon Pennell, was not injured and charged with driving while impaired. More charges are pending upon the completion of the investigation.
The roadway was closed for about one hour during the on-scene investigation.
