ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Halloween is just a few short weeks away and many folks across Rochester are already thinking about what costumes to wear. Arlene's Costumes on Portland Avenue has been a staple destination for many during this time of year for decades now. The family behind the costume shop works to piece clothing and accessories together, aiming to give each customer that walks through their doors the perfect costume for them. “Halloween is huge in Rochester. Everyone likes to dress up and go out to parties, nightlife, and all kinds of things," Arlene's Marketing and Customer Service Manager Terry Sinopoli said. "It's been really busy this year and we're really excited." Their shop has a little bit of everything spanning their shelves and clothing racks. Bedazzled cowboy hats, masquerade masks and even the fruit and vegetable costumes that were used in the old Lori's Natural Foods commercials. This year, Arlene's has definitely seen some popular choices for costumes. “Scary is in this year, so we're seeing a lot of ghost faces, "Scream" masks and we're even seeing a lot of traditional stuff. Vampires, witches and things like that, even for the little ones," Sinopoli said. Sinopoli added that a familiar trend may be making a comeback this year as well. “The other thing we're seeing is a lot of things with brands like Coca-Cola, Fanta and things like that. It's been a lot of fun to see people kind of go back to their nostalgia -- going through their things they might have seen when they were kids.” While many people do still buy their clothes and accessories outright, some are opting in for renting costumes. Arlene's continues to offer this option as it's sustainable and, with a limited amount of each costume available to rent, it keeps each rental unique. Arlene's Costumes continues to add outfits and accessories to their store as Halloween approaches and they continue to sell their items online too.
