SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Indigenous Peoples’ Day, also known as Columbus Day, falls on the second Monday in October, and while many stores will remain open, there will be no mail and some banks will be closed. President Joe Biden officially recognized Indigenous Peoples' Day in 2021 with a proclamation.  Governor Gavin Newsom has proclaimed the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the State of California for the past five years and is expected to do it again this year for the sixth time. According to Gov. Newsom, "California is home to the largest and most diverse population of Indigenous peoples prior to European contact, and inherits a rich, Indigenous cultural legacy while bearing the responsibility of its historical role in the near-destruction of California Native peoples through their violent dislocation." Here in San Diego, there are several celebrations as San Diego County is home to 17 tribal communities, the most of any county in the U.S. The San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians for the past two years has hosted an Indigenous Peoples' Day celebration at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. All tribal offices will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday. OTSD State Historic Park in Old Town San Diego has a Native American interpretive public gathering area for events and ceremonies. Named Iipay ~Tipai Kumeyaay Mut Niihepok (Land of the First People), the space honors the culture of the Kumeyaay Nation and their relationship with the San Diego River and Old Town San Diego. The San Diego Miramar College Student Affairs office hosts an Indigenous Peoples' Day commemoration. That event is set for Monday, Oct. 14 from noon to 2 p.m. at Compass Point. There will be a free lunch and a performance from the Soaring Eagles. The San Diego Unified Board of Education passed a resolution in 2019 to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day. The resolution recognizes that Indigenous Peoples have long lived on the lands where San Diego is built.  Indigenous Peoples’ Day is not recognized as a school holiday in California, but some districts, like San Francisco Public Schools, do have the day off. Check your child's school calendar to find out if they have the day off. Here is a list of what will be open and closed on Monday, Oct. 14, 2024, for Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Banks Indigenous Peoples' Day (Columbus Day) is a Federal Reserve bank holiday, which means most banks will be closed. Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will however be trading. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank, and Capital One branches will be closed. Chase Bank and TD Bank will be open. You can still access your funds through online banking and ATMs. Mail All United States Postal Service (USPS) retail locations will be closed so there will be no access to P.O. boxes, and there will be no mail delivery on Monday, Oct. 14. Regular mail delivery will resume on Tuesday. UPS and FedEx locations will be open and delivery will continue as normal on Monday, but FedEx will have modified service for its FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy services. Retail Stores Most stores and restaurants will remain open for the holiday. Target, Walmart, T.J. Maxx and CVS, and grocery stores like Whole Foods, Kroger, Aldi, Safeway and Trader Joe's, will be open.  Restaurants like Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Chipotle, McDonald's and Chili's will also be open on Monday. But make sure to check with your local store for their operating hours as the holiday could impact them. Government Offices Indigenous Peoples' Day (Columbus Day) is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal, state and local government offices will be closed.  DMV, libraries, courts and other government-operated offices will be closed on Monday. Across the country, some states celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and some commemorate it through proclamations.
