TOPEKA (KSNT) - Kansas sports hall of fame week wrapped up with the induction of the 2024 class at a ceremony in Topeka. Capital city native, Mark Turgeon, was among this year's 12 honorees. Turgeon was an all-state basketball player for the Hayden Wildcats and continued on to play for the Kansas Jayhawks. His coaching career included leading the Wichita State Shockers to the Sweet 16 at the 2006 NCAA tournament. Turgeon later became the head coach at the University of Maryland where he was named Big 10 coach of the year in 2015. 27 News spoke with the now hall-of-famer about what it meant to be honored at a ceremony in his hometown. "Some place where you grew up and you love, it's terrific," he said. "I had my most success in this state if you think about my Hayden days, my KU days, and of course Wichita State. It's my favorite place in the world." 'A legacy honored: Thurgood Marshall’s son commemorates Brown v. Board in Topeka' To see the entire 2024 Kansas sports hall of fame class, click here.
