Glenn Wright is carrying the Democratic banner in the 3rd Congressional District toward Election Day.And he said this week there is an opportunity to win the contest, something that would be an extraordinary political feat in the heavily Republican district.Wright, a former member of the Summit County Council who led the county’s Democratic Party for years, is mounting his second bid for Congress after an unsuccessful campaign in 2022.“There’s a lot of anti-Trump sentiment in this state,” Wright said as he described one of the possibilities that could create an opening for a Democrat in the congressional district.Wright said others issues like abortion, the economy and affordable housing also provide openings. He said he has more time to campaign this year than he did in 2022 and the congressional seat is open with the incumbent, Rep. John Curtis, instead seeking a spot in the Senate. Wright also contended his Republican opponent, Mike Kennedy, is not aggressively campaigning.“I think there can be some surprises,” Wright said.Wright, 76, is an Air Force veteran who served two combat tours of duty during the Vietnam War. His career was spent as a business consultant specializing in liability, industrial safety and fire insurance. He lives in Prospector. One of the planks in his platform centers on housing. He said the federal government could “target grants” to communities seeking to develop affordable housing. Monies could be used, as an example, to acquire land for housing and build infrastructure, he said. That would lower the cost of building the housing, which could then reduce prices for the units, he said. Wright said his time as a member of the County Council provides background on housing issues. If elected, Wright said, he would draft legislation that would provide grants to local governments with “solid plans” for affordable housing. The candidate said climate change and energy policies are also key to the campaign. He described climate change as an existential threat and said he wants to “decarbonize our energy infrastructure.” He said there are opportunities to produce geothermal energy in the state. Wright acknowledged that sort of energy transformation would impact places in Utah where fossil fuels are crucial to the economy. He said the federal government could support economic development in those areas as the reliance on fossil fuels is reduced or the use of the fuels is repurposed into carbon-neutral sources.Wright addressed the war between Israel and Hamas, saying the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on the Jewish state was “incredibly brutal.” He said Israel has “every right to retaliate” against Hamas.  The tactics employed by Israel, though, are “deeply flawed,” Wright said, adding he is worried the response to the attack has “created more future terrorists than they destroyed.”Wright outlined support for the Israeli people but said the government of Israel needs to oppose the “indiscriminate destruction of (a) civilian population’s infrastructure.”He said he supports a two-state solution, meaning the formation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.Wright explained the importance of Taiwan as he spoke about policies toward China, describing the semiconductor industry in Taiwan as being critical to the U.S. economy. Wright would like the U.S. to increase the presence of the Navy and the Air Force in the region as he outlined a desire for a “strong pro-Taiwan foreign policy.”Wright addressed the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as well. He described Russian leader Vladimir Putin as a “war criminal” and said he directly caused the hostilities. Wright supports military assistance to Ukraine. He also questioned former President Trump’s relationship with the Russian leader.“I don’t know what Putin has on him,” he said. The post Park City Democrat sees chance to win congressional seat amid ‘a lot of anti-Trump sentiment’ appeared first on Park Record.
