HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Caregiving is not something you often prepare for but at some point, you will be one or need one. Resources such as the nonprofit "The Caregiver Foundation" are out there to help. Check out what's going on around the nation on our National News page "Caregiving comes in pieces, especially in the family. We start helping here and then we need a little more help and a little more help." Gary Powell started The Caregiver Foundation after seeing the growing need in the community for services to support caregivers. Do these things to make your house safe for kupuna "They need practical advice. They need suggestions, referrals, connections, money management and help in legal areas. So we just keep expanding their services," Powell explained. The foundation emphasizes the importance of addressing the emotional aspect of caregiving. According to Gary, recognizing the role is the first step in caring for a loved one. "If we haven't faced what caregiving actually is, then our emotional state is not good and that's where the stress begins building." Caregiving comes in various ages as well. Youth caregivers are an important sector that often goes unrecognized. "There are thousands here in Hawaii. We know government figures show at least three million across the United States, and it's probably much, much higher," he added. Caregiving is almost always a way of saying goodbye and that's where the foundation is most helpful. "When we're lucky, families get us involved early and we're able to help with all sorts of things to make life a lot more pleasant for the person who needs care and the caregiver all the way through the end of life." The foundation will host a fundraiser on Nov. 2 to help continue its support mission. "We pay for our educational programs. We pay for community workshops, starting support groups, but we also help fund the caregiver support group for youth with direct grants. Gary said his work never gets old, even after 17 years of running the foundation.
