BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — From red beans and rice to cabbage and cornbread, South Louisiana knows a thing or two about soul food. A small kitchen in Baton Rouge serves up dishes packed full of flavor and love. Let's take you there for this week's capital cuisine. "It's a country kitchen, it's a little small country kitchen," said Deneta Greely-Driffin, owner of Dorothy's Soul Food Kitchen. Located on Gardere Lane, Dorothy's Soul Food Kitchen has been cooking hot meals for nearly three decades. Greely-Driffin, a Southern University graduate, is the daughter of the kitchen's namesake and has been running the show for the last 24 years. "So my mom was from down here, Louisiana," said Greely-Driffin. "She was born and raised, but she moved to New York and she left here when she was 16 and she went to New York and she stayed there for 23, 24 years. and she said, 'You know what? I'm going to take my roots back and I'm going to cook down there because in New York, she cooked like she cooked here and there. We had restaurants there. But they didn't do too good because they wasn't used to the southern cuisine." Louisiana plantation in top 10 most haunted spots in the world, study says Greely-Driffin uses those lessons learned from her mom. She serves up home-cooked meals in an atmosphere that makes you feel welcome. "I love it, I've been doing it since I was five," said Greely-Driffin. "I have eight brothers and sisters, so my mom made me get in the kitchen with her and cook. She said, 'You got to cook everything from scratch. Everything had to be perfect. You cannot have no one cook your food.' I can't let nobody cook." Along the walls of Dorothy's are several uplifting messages that Mrs. Deneta says she hopes will brighten the day of her guests. "I love inspirational things," said Greely-Driffin. "I love for people to come in. A lot of people say, 'We come here and we read all your stuff and it lifts our spirit.'" But if the messages don't get through to you, I can name a thing or two on the menu that just might. "Smothered chicken and smothered pork chops — And we make homemade sweet potato pies here too," said Greely-Driffin. We make all our desserts, homemade bread pudding." So, bring your appetite over to Dorothy's where Mrs. Deneta and her family, will treat you like family. "Come on down and get some great home-cooked food," said Greely-Driffin. "We do everything from scratch and we put all our love into it." Mrs. Deneta also says she hopes to have a mobile kitchen in the future to take her business around Southern, LSU and other venues across the capital area. But for now, you can visit Dorothy's at 1221 Gardere Ln. Open weekly from Wednesday to Sunday.
