Wild center Joel Eriksson Ek suffered a broken nose during Saturday’s shootout loss to Seattle and did not travel with the team for Sunday evening’s game at Winnipeg. The Wild also were without defenseman Jared Spurgeon, who did not travel with the team because he’s day-to-day with a lower body injury, immediately testing a team that struggled through injuries last season and missed the playoffs. “It was something we had talked about last year; we feel like we’ve gotten stronger in our depth,” coach John Hynes told reporters Sunday at Canada Life Centre ahead of a 5 p.m. puck drop. “It’s never a great time, but we’ve got to find a way to manage it and find a way to get a gritty road win.” The Wild (1-0-1) added former Gophers center Travis Boyd on emergency recall, and defenseman Declan Chisholm was set to play his first game of the season. Ryan Hartman moved from the third line to center Matt Boldy and Marcus Johansson on the second line, and rookie Marat Khusnutdinov took his spot on the third line. Freddy Gaudreau moved to center on the fourth line, and and rookie Liam Ohgren made his first appearance of the season at right wing. Eriksson Ek was injured in the second period of Saturday’s night’s 5-4 loss at Xcel Energy Center when Kraken defenseman Adam Larsson elbowed him in the face. Bleeding from his nose, the Wild’s top center went immediately to the training room. He emerged wearing a full shield at the beginning of the third period. But after one more shift, he left for good. The Wild said Sunday that Eriksson Ek is expected to play in the Wild’s next game, Tuesday at St. Louis. To make room for Boyd on the roster, the Wild reassigned goaltender Jesper Wallstedt to Iowa of the American Hockey League. Boyd, 31, had a goal and assist in Iowa’s 6-4 loss to Manitoba on Saturday. Boyd had two goals and eight points in 16 games for the Arizona Coyotes last season before being lost to the season because of shoulder and pectoral injuries suffered during a hard check.
