A man was arrested outside one of former President Donald Trump’s campaign events with illegal guns, authorities said Sunday. Vem Miller, 49, drove to Coachella, Calif. with a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine, the Riverside County sheriff’s office announced in a Sunday press release. Miller, a Las Vegas resident, was arrested without incident, according to authorities. He had been stopped at a checkpoint outside the rally on Saturday. “We probably stopped another assassination attempt,” Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told Southern California News Group. Miller was booked at a county jail on two gun charges and released Sunday on $5,000 bail, according to online records. He is due back in court Jan. 2. “This incident did not impact the safety of former President Trump or attendees of the event,” the sheriff’s office said. However, Miller claimed he supported the former president and had no plans to harm Trump. He told the Riverside Press-Enterprise the weapons were in the trunk of his vehicle and he had previously attended Trump rallies in Nevada with them in the back and encountered no resistance from police. Sheriff Bianco described Miller as part of a right-wing, anti-government group, according to the Press-Enterprise. He is a registered Republican and ran for a state assembly seat in Nevada in 2022, losing in the primary. Miller’s LinkedIn page reads in part: “I have seen our rights be taken, while the power of big government grows. I have seen small businesses and the middle class be squashed. I have seen unlawful mandates and politicians acting like dictators. I have also seen how the power of the money flows through politics and a political class that no longer works for We The People.” Trump, 78, has been targeted by two failed assassins during his 2024 campaign. On July 13, he was wounded by Thomas Crooks, 20, at a rally north of Pittsburgh in Butler, Pa. About two months later, on Sept. 15, Ryan Routh waited on a Florida golf course with a rifle and plans to assassinate Trump, according to authorities. However, the 58-year-old Routh was spotted by Secret Service agents before he could fire a shot.
