One reason the Browns are 1-5 is safety Rodney McCleod is tied for the team lead in touchdowns — two. McCleod returned a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown in the 20-16 loss to the Raiders on Sept. 29. He scored the Browns’ only touchdown in the 20-16 loss to the Eagles on Oct. 13 in Philadelphia when he returned a blocked field goal 50 yards to the end zone to tie the score at 10-10 just before halftime. And what did the Browns do with that momentum? Nothing. But only one of his 16 completions for the day netted more than 25 yards. The Browns had the ball for 53 offensive plays and all they scored was three field goals by Dustin Hopkins. Coach Kevin Stefanski did not have to elaborate after the game when asked if he is sticking with Watson — “Yes,” Stefanski said — despite four straight losses. The problems with this team definitely run deeper than Watson, but he also is definitely part of the problem. He does not lift the players around him, which is what good quarterbacks do. Exhibit A is Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay. Mayfield completed 24 of 36 passes and threw four touchdown passes Oct. 13 in a 51-27 thrashing of the Saints. He also threw three interceptions. Joe Flacco threw two touchdown passes and a pick for the Colts when they nipped the Titans, 20-17. Flacco has played in three games for the 3-3 Colts. He is 1-1 as a starter with seven touchdown passes and one interception. Watson has thrown five touchdown passes and three picks in six games. The Browns committed seven penalties in Philadelphia — all on offense. Trailing, 20-13, with four minutes left and the ball third-and-goal at the Eagles 3, rookie guard Zak Zinter was flagged for a false start. Right tackle Jedrick Wills was called for a false start on fourth-and-8 after David Njoku couldn’t hold onto a pass from Watson around the 2. At that juncture, Stefanski chose to have Hopkins kick a field goal rather than go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 13. I don’t know how coaches are supposed to coach players to not false start. There has to be more to it than, “Don’t move early, dude.” Watson missed connections on two deep passes to Jerry Jeudy in the first half. The misses are just the latest examples why the Browns have scored one touchdown in their last 29 possessions. Imagine all four Beatles each singing a different song on stage at the same time. That’s what the Browns’ offense is like. “Each one of us has to lock in,” Watson told reporters in Philadelphia. “When we had opportunities we just, again, shot ourselves in the foot and went backward instead of forward. “Especially in the first half, I missed out on some opportunities. The biggest thing is on a couple deep shots, the timing was a little bit off. There was miscommunication with a couple receivers about what they’re seeing and what I’m seeing. I take responsibility for that because (the Eagles) showed a little bit differently. Usually their corners play soft coverage. Today they pressed us. During the week, I should have emphasized with the receivers a little more what I wanted them to do with that.” Starting center Ethan Pocic was inactive because of a knee injury. His replacement, Nick Harris, suffered a fractured fibula on the Browns’ third offensive play of the first quarter, causing Stefanski to move Michael Dunn from right guard to center and reinsert Zinter at right guard. There was one bright spot for the offense. Stefanski stayed with the run game in the second half, even though running back Jerome Ford was knocked out of the game with a hamstring injury early in the contest. The Browns rushed 25 times for 100 yards. Fifteen of the carries (56 yards) were in the second half. That bodes well for the future with Nick Chubb (knee) likely to be added to the 53-man roster before the Browns host the Bengals on Oct. 20. “They (the Eagles) had to play honest to the run game,” Watson said. “You could see in the second half, it opened up play-action and checkdowns. It doesn’t put so much stress on the O-Line.” Watson was sacked five times and hit a total of 10 times. He has been sacked 31 times already with 11 games remaining. The Browns quintet of quarterbacks were sacked 45 times last year. We are not going to close this column without taking the defense to the woodshed. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts entered the game having thrown four interceptions in four games. He also lost four fumbles. But the Browns did not force a takeaway. The aggressiveness that is a trademark of Jim Schwartz’s defense is not without risks. It leaves the Browns vulnerable to chunk plays. Wide receiver A.J. Brown scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass and caught another pass for 40 yards, DeVonta Smith scored on a 45-yard TD pass and tight end Grant Calcaterra hauled in a pass for 34 yards. Stefanski and his coaches have much to fix, The bye week of Nov. 10 can’t come quickly enough.
