It’s crunch time. With two weeks remaining in the regular season, jockeying or playoff positioning has reached a fevered pitch. From here on out, the margin for error for teams to qualify for the playoffs and to host a coveted first-round game is slim. With two regular-season games yet to be played, 28 of the area’s 29 teams are alive for playoff spots, a rather impressive number. Mentor, Gilmour, Hawken, Benedictine, Lake Catholic, Perry and Kirtland have already clinched postseason bids and will spend the next two weeks fighting to finish as high in their respective regions as possible. So, with a tip of the cap to JoeEitel.com, here’s a look at each team’s playoff positioning with two weeks of regular-season games to go. The official rankings come out on Tuesdays, but Eitel’s site is historically spot-on accurate: Division I, Region 1 Mentor is the only area team in this region. The Cardinals (8-0) have clinched a first-round home playoff game and could be the top overall seed with wins over 5-3 Strongsville and 2-6 Euclid. Division II, Region 5 No area teams have clinched yet, but two are listed as “control own destiny” by Eitel. Riverside (4-4) is currently ninth and controls its destiny with games at Mayfield (3-5) and Chardon (5-2) to come. South (3-5) is 12th and controls its destiny. The Rebels host (5-3) Kenston in Week 9 and travel to Mayfield in Week 10. Three other teams are outside the top 16 at this point, but are not mathematically eliminated, though their road to the postseason is a bit tougher. North (3-5) is 18th with games against Chardon and Kenston remaining. Mayfield (3-5) is 20th with games against Riverside and South remaining. Euclid (2-6) is 24th with games against 4-4 Cleveland Heights and Mentor remaining. Division III, Region 9 Ten of the area’s 29 teams are in this Region, so there will undoubtedly be some area head-to-head matchups in the first-round postseason play in early November. Gilmour and Hawken have already clinched spots, but the other eight are alive. Gilmour (8-0) has locked up a postseason slot with a home game against Rhodes and a road game at 5-2 VASJ still on the docket, while Hawken (7-1) is also headed toward Week 1 with a home game against 4-4 Harvey at a trip to 7-1 Perry still to be played. Gilmour is currently third in the region and Hawken, whose only loss is to Gilmour, is fourth. Chardon (5-2) is fifth. The Hilltoppers control their destiny with road games at North and Riverside upcoming. Kenston (5-3) is seventh. The Bombers, too, control their destiny with a road game at South and a home game against North filling out the regular-season schedule. Geneva (7-1) is eighth this week and controls its own destiny with a home game against Madison this week and a trip to Jefferson in Week 10. Madison (6-2) is 10th this week and controls its destiny with a trip to Geneva this week and then a jaunt to 2-6 Conneaut in Week 10. It’s a safe bet that the winner of this week’s Geneva-Madison game clinches a playoff spot. VASJ (5-2) is 11th and also controls its destiny with home games against 1-7 Akron SVSM and undefeated Gilmour in the final two weeks. University (3-5) sits at 16th in the region. Dohn Community (1-5) is on the slate for this week, but the non-OHSAA school canceled it’s most recent game (Oct. 5 at VASJ), so the status of that game is up in the air. The Preppers also play Week 10 at 1-7 Howland. Harvey (4-4) and Brush (2-6) are alive for postseason slots. The Red Raiders, 18th this week, are at Hawken in Week 9 and at Lutheran West in Week 10, but might need help in other teams ahead of them losing to get to Week 11. The same can be said for 2-6 Brush, who is 20th this week and plays Benedictine and Elyria Catholic. Division III, Region 10 Benedictine (6-2) is in second and has already clinched a playoff spot with games against Brush and Akron SVSM to be played. Division IV, Region 13 Lake Catholic (8-0) and Perry (7-1) are first and second in the region and have already clinched playoff spots. Lake has road games at Canton Central Catholic and NDCL, while Perry wraps up the regular season with two home games against West Geauga and Hawken. Final seeding will be closely watched in this region. Glenville, the defending Division IV state champion, previously was in Region 14 but was moved to Region 13 this year, and is fifth in the region. It’s safe to say Perry and Lake Catholic would prefer to be cross-bracketed from the Tarblooders, who are 5-3 with a signature win over Division I St. Edward. That means they wouldn’t have to play Coach Ted Ginn’s team until the regional final. The way a 16-team bracket is set up, the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 team are on the same half of the bracket, while Nos. 2, 3 and 6 are on the opposite side. If the season ended today, No. 1 Lake would be in the same half of the bracket at No. 5 Glenville and No. 2 Perry would be on the flip side. Stay tuned for how that final seeding shakes out. NDCL (5-3) is 10th in the region and controls its destiny with a road game at Padua and a home game against Lake, while West Geauga (2-6) is alive at No. 20 with games against Perry and Orange. Division V, Region 17 Berkshire and Chagrin Falls are in good spots with two games to go. Both control their own destiny and still have to play each other. Berkshire (6-2) is currently fourth and travels to 5-3 Fairview this week, with a home game against Chagrin in Week 10. The Tigers (5-3) are fifth this week, hosting Cardinal in Week 9 before the showdown with the Badgers in the finale. The only other area team in Region 17 is winless Beachwood, which is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Division VI, Region 21 Kirtland has already locked up the No. 1 seed in the region. Per the Kirtland stat crew, this is the sixth straight year the Hornets have locked up the top spot in the region and the 10th time it has happened since Coach Tiger LaVerde took over the program in 2006. The Hornets will go for a 10-0 regular season with a road game at Crestwood in Week 9 and a home game against Cardinal in Week 10. Wickliffe (5-3) is currently 11th. The Blue Devils don’t control their destiny but can put themselves in good position with home wins over Brooklyn and Beachwood. Richmond Heights (0-4) is tied for 26th but is not mathematically eliminated yet, with games at undefeated Edon and 4-4 Cleveland Central Catholic on the docket. Division VII, Region 26 Fairport (4-3) is 16th with a home game against Mathews and a road game at undefeated Windham still to be played. The Skippers do not control their destiny per Eitel. Cardinal (1-7) is 23rd, with road games at Chagrin Falls and Kirtland yet to go.
