It was all chalk in the opening round of the Colonial Valley Conference Tournament, but now it’s going to get interesting heading to the quarterfinals set for Monday. The two top seeds join the fray, and here’s a look at each matchup: No. 8 West Windsor-Plainsboro South (5-6-1) at No. 1 Notre Dame (11-1), 4 p.m. This meeting pits the Colonial Division champion Irish against the Pirates, who are a game away from winning the Valley Division. Notre Dame has dominated the series, winning the last 10 games. You have to go back to 2013 for the last South win. The Irish’s only loss came to powerful Hammonton. Since that defeat, they have won five straight by a combined score of 26-1. Solid up and down the field, the Irish are led by senior Ellie Marrone with 20 goals and 11 assists, junior Emma McVey has 12 goals, senior Marie Conway has 10 helpers and sophomore Victoria Suschke has six goals and eight assists. A young ND defense is anchored by senior Adriana Tattoli in the cage. WW-P South has been playing well, having won four of the last five games and three of the wins were by one goal. Not a team that is going to have a lot of play around the cage, the Pirates rely on sound defense and valued possessions. They are led by junior Rimla Riza with eight goals and junior Emily Kim has three assists. Junior Isabella Zola is a very capable goaltender. The Irish need to come out and take control early, while South needs to rise to the occasion and slow down the ND attack. No. 7 Robbinsville (5-8-1) at No. 2 Allentown (11-4), 4 p.m. This is the time of the season the Redbirds have been waiting for as first-year coach Kayla Peterson upgraded the schedule to be well tested come tournament time. Allentown had a five-game winning streak snapped by Southern Regional and now it’s ready to start a new one against an opponent it defeated 6-0 in the regular season. Junior Ella Sluder leads the Redbirds with 22 goals and 10 assists, but this team has plenty of firepower with junior Avery Gower with seven goals and nine assists, senior Hailee Ladu has eight goals, including three in the last two games, senior Janeen Rukab has eight goals and junior Kelsey Looughlin has seven. Kylie Elefante, the all-time saves leader at Allentown, is always tough in the goal. After a tough four-game skid, the Ravens have turned it around and are playing their best hockey with three straight wins in a stretch where they have allowed just one goal. Senior Julia Meddahi leads Robbinsville with four goals and two assists and junior Grace Miller has caged a pair. Lynsey Parrott, a sophomore, has handled things well in the cage and can keep the Ravens in the game. Allentown can’t take this one for granted as the Ravens are playing better, but the Redbirds haven’t lost two straight all season. No. 6 Princeton Day (5-7) at No. 3 Hopewell Valley (11-2), 4 p.m. Beware of the Bulldogs, this is a team that can take a bite out of any team’s title hopes, they are that good and playing very well. Riding an eight-game winning streak, the only losses have come in a pair of one goal tilts to Notre Dame (4-3) and Allentown (3-2). This is a group on a mission. Other than the seven goals given up to ND and Allentown, the Bulldogs have allowed just four goals in the 11 wins and won seven by 6-0 shutouts. One of best all-around players in the area, senior Raina Jablonski leads Hopewell with 15 goals and 13 assists, senior Sierra Chow has 16 goals and nine assists, sophomore Zoe Lawler has 12 goals and eight assists and senior Lillian Brennan has eight goals. Theodora Milchanoski has been solid in the cage and anchors a strong defense and transition game. Princeton Day dropped a 4-1 decision to Hopewell Valley in the regular season. The Panthers are coming off a nice 6-0 win over WW-P North in the opening round and will be looking for another solid effort against the Bulldogs. It has been a year of growing pains for a young PDS team. It is led by sophomore Samantha Dandy with four goals and junior Amelia Lach has two assists. Molly Hall has been very good in the goal. Hopewell Valley has been impressive this season, and has its sights set on making amends for the two losses. No. 5 Princeton (6-6) at No. 4 Lawrence (9-4-1), 6:30 p.m. Certainly, this is the game that has the most intrigue as these two teams have been among the best in the conference for several years. Lawrence captured the regular season matchup, 2-1. The Cardinals opened the season with a 6-1-1 mark and have gone 3-3 over the last six games. Senior Caroline Rotteveel is a premier player and leads Lawrence with 36 goals and 19 assists and she is nine points short of 100 for the season. Another senior Bella Scanella has six goals and five assists and Peyton Valentino has five goals. Tess Adolf has been one of the best goalies in the area and her play has been a key to the Cardinals success. The Tigers have been the foremost team in the conference for several years and with a young squad are looking for tournament time to be a second season. They have split the last six games and another ounce of motivation can be that longtime coach Heather Serverson is one win away from her 200th. Serverson stands  at 199-90-10 in now her 17th season. Senior Mia Ramirez, who has had an impactful four years, leads Princeton with 21 goals and three assists. Sophomore Lila Casto has five goals and seven assists and Sara Cate Walker has 11 goals. There are positives on both teams and it could come down to the experience of the Cardinals against the nothing-to-lose attitude of the Tigers.
