SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and Savannah Mayor Van Johnson along with SAFE Shelter representatives and speakers talked about the importance of addressing domestic abuse. Karen Alston, a domestic violence victims advocate said, "Those that are behind the closed doors, they don't necessarily want to be behind the closed doors. They don't come out because we as citizens, we push them back in the door. We're always saying, 'Why don't you just leave?', instead of saying to them, 'I have a listening ear. What is it that you need, right now?',". During DVAM month, victim advocates, allied professionals, survivors of abuse, their loved ones, and the surrounding community come together to mourn the lives lost to domestic violence, celebrate the progress that has been made to end the epidemic, and connect with others working to create change. SAFE Shelter is a center for domestic violence services that aims to prevent domestic violence, protect victims and promote change in lives, families and the Savannah community.
