SAVANNAH, Ga (WSAV) - A farm is recalling packages of mushrooms, that were distributed nationwide, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Enoki King Mushroom Farm of Ventura, Ca. is recalling lot 4877 of its 5.3-ounce (150g) packages of Enoki Mushroom (Product of USA). The recalled Enoki comes in a clear plastic package with the description “Enoki Mushroom” in English and French with the lot code, 4877, on the front in black ink. On the back, there is UPC code 860011505600. The products were distributed from Ca. and N.Y. through produce distributors or wholesalers to retail stores nationwide. (Photos provided by the FDA) The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by Maryland State Department of Health revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the mushrooms. Although healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, according to the FDA. The distribution of the product has been suspended, according to the FDA. Consumers who have purchased any package of Enoki with the code 4877 are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
