Sadie Engelhardt vs. Rylee Blade. It is one of the greatest rivalries in California high school sports at the moment, and the state’s two best girls cross country runners delivered another memorable chapter Saturday morning during the Clovis Invitational’s Bill Buettner Girls Sweepstakes Race at Woodward Park in Fresno. Engelhardt, the Ventura High School senior who is headed to North Carolina State, prevailed this time around, completing the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes and 24.2 seconds. Blade, a senior from Santiago High School who recently committed to Florida State, was second in a time of 16:31.3. The next finisher (Irvine’s Summer Wilson) crossed the finish line 37 1/2 seconds after Blade. Engelhardt and Blade both eclipsed the previous meet record, a 16:40 posted by Engelhardt in winning last year’s sweepstakes race. Engelhardt also broke the previous Woodward Park course record of 16:31, set by Malibu’s Claudia Lane at the 2017 CIF State Championships. Engelhardt and Blade have squared off numerous times throughout their high school careers, both in cross country and track and field. Blade got the upper hand last month when she claimed the individual sweepstakes title at the Woodbridge Classic. Engelhardt finished fifth in that race. Clovis Buchanan won the girls sweepstake team title with 65 points, while JSerra placed second with 104 points, Santiago finished third with 119 points, one spot ahead of Ventura (153). Blade was not the only standout performer for Santiago on Saturday; Braelyn Combe placed sixth (17:23.5), Audrey Buckley finished 30th (18:12.7) and Taylor Davis was 39th (18:27.2). Other Inland runners who finished Top 50 in the girls sweepstakes race were Claremont’s Isla Bulmer (14th, 17:48.4); Murrieta Valley’s Jordin Lieberman (17:51.4) and Arielle Avina (35th, 18:19.7); Great Oak’s Avery Smith (22nd, 17:54.5); and King’s Elizabeth Jacklin (36th, 18:20.2) and Natalie Drewitz (46th, 18:38.5). King’s Maximo Zavaleta finished eighth in the Rob Brenner Boys Sweepstakes Race on Saturday and helped the Wolves to a fourth-place finish in the team standings. Zavaleta completed the course in a time of 14:59.7. Brad Quezada was 23rd (15:24.4), Brayden Lunetta finished 36th (15:37.9) and Logan Carlson placed 50th (15:45.2) for the Wolves. Great Oak was eighth in the boys sweepstakes standings. Leading the way for the Wolfpack were Jack Paradise (25th, 15:25.4), Jacob Brown (28th, 15:35.3) and Christian Gump (33rd, 15:35.3). Riverside Poly’s Micah Chandler finished 47th in a time of 15:44.9 Beckman won the boys sweepstakes team title with 83 points, and Carmichael Jesuit was the runner-up with 97 points. Josiah Tostenson of Oregon’s Crater High School won the individual title in a time of 14:41.
